Elegant Longines dress watch with moonphase display

At first glance, Longines experts have created a perfect dress watch, with well-proportioned dimensions and a comfortable size. The finely crafted aesthetics are crowned by the moonphase display, although it is only functional in the Northern Hemisphere. Could they have made a mistake in Saint-Imier, Switzerland?

In its official motto – Elegance is an attitude – Longines, celebrating elegance, expands its flagship Flagship series with 3 new versions. Each variant distinctly demands an elegant appearance and demeanor from its wearer. Whether viewed from the dial or the case back, one encounters finely and sensitively crafted details.

Since the newly released models are part of the Heritage edition within the Flagship series, it is known that a previous model, specifically from 1957, served as the starting point. The Flagship series was the second in the Longines collection to receive a name – immediately after the Conquest. Prior to this, models were referred to only by identification numbers. The name originates from naval terminology, referring to the ship where the fleet commander is stationed, flying the fleet commander’s flag. That is why a fully rigged three-masted sailing ship can be found on the case back of the Longines Flagship Heritage Moonphase.

Respecting the aesthetic features of the inspiring 1957 edition, the dials of the current releases are also slightly domed, meaning they slope gently toward the case. The sunburst silver and blue, as well as the silvery opal-colored dials, are all complemented by 11 applied indices. At 6 o’clock, these are replaced by a painted marker and the “SWISS MADE” inscription.

The domed design with raised indices gives the watch a perceptible sense of depth, all under multi-layer anti-reflective sapphire crystal, which is standard in the high-end segment. The dauphine-style hands are filled with Swiss-made Super-LumiNova® in very narrow strips.

The dial, however, is dominated by the aforementioned moonphase display. The Moon appears differently in the night sky each day. Since it has no light of its own, it reflects the rays of the Sun. As it orbits the Earth, the illumination of its surface changes along the way. This change is called the moonphase.

During the new moon, the Moon is positioned between the Earth and the Sun, and we cannot see it. Afterwards, day by day, the size of the illuminated crescent increases as it moves alongside the Earth. Continuing its path, it passes behind the Earth, at which point we see the full moon. From there, its visible size decreases until it reaches the new moon phase again. The period between two new moons lasts on average 29 and a half days.

The Longines Flagship Heritage model with moonphase complication depicts the synodic cycle of the Moon. Setting the moonphase requires a lunar calendar. Interestingly, the direction of the Moon’s crescent appears different when viewed from the two hemispheres. In the Southern Hemisphere, it is seen in the opposite direction, but here in Hungary, the Longines moonphase display shows an accurate representation!
