TUDOR's latest chronograph model is called Flamingo Blue, and its dial evokes the turquoise blue of the tropics, where flamingos so enjoy spending time. It draws heavily on the traditions of Swiss watchmaking, but does not consider them to be dogmas to be accepted without criticism, but rather rethinks their values. The watch follows Tudor's special, consciously unconventional modus operandi, or method of procedure, but in this case, creed would also be an apt term. Tudor's first mechanical chronograph was the Tudor Oysterdate, which combined the characteristics of diving watches and sports chronographs and had a robust and, at the time, large 39-millimeter case. The Black Bay Chrono series is a continuation and further development of the Oysterdate's unconventional character.
Flamingo Blue is a unique shade of turquoise that evokes the crystal-clear waters of the Caribbean and the blue flamingo, and is paired with contrasting black subdials and Tudor's iconic Snowflake hands. These snowflake hands are coated with Super-LumiNova®.
The distinctive hands first appeared on the brand’s diving watches in 1969 for maximum legibility and have now become one of Tudor’s hallmarks. The layout of the watch’s dial is reminiscent of the brand’s first chronographs: a date window at 6 o’clock in place of the index, and two sub-dials on the watch, one of which is a 45-minute minute counter and the other a seconds hand. When measuring time, the seconds can be read from the central seconds hand.
The 41 mm case is made of stainless steel, more precisely from the 316L alloy commonly used in watchmaking. The case has a satin and polished surface, which is complemented by a tachymeter scale insert made of black anodized or anti-corrosion aluminum. The fine detail of the case is enriched by the embossed Tudor rose on the crown, as well as the buttons, also made of stainless steel, with which we can operate the timekeeping functions. The glass of the watch is a domed sapphire crystal, which not only provides an elegant appearance, but also excellently resists scratches and other damage. The chronograph's 200-meter water resistance makes it an ideal choice for both sporty and everyday wear.
At the heart of the Tudor Black Bay Chrono is the Manufacture Caliber MT5813, an automatic movement with a chronograph function. The movement boasts several complications: it has a column-wheel clutch, which reduces the delay in time measurement, and a silicon hairspring that is resistant to magnetism. The movement, which has a power reserve of 70 hours, is certified by the Contrôle Officiel Suisse des Chronomètres (COSC), and its performance exceeds the criteria required for this certification. Tudor sets stricter accuracy requirements, ensuring that the daily deviation of the assembled watches does not exceed -2/+4 seconds. The watch strap is made of stainless steel with five buckles that can be adjusted without tools. The metal strap uses ceramic ball bearings, which ensure the smooth and secure operation of the lock.
